Getting to Know the Bible

Christian Embassy New York October 2, 2017

But don’t let its size frighten you. When you know your Bible, you’ll discover that

it’s filled with stories of adventure and romance, heroes and villains, courage and

cowardice, powerful leaders and ordinary people – just like you.

You will also find that the Bible has the answers to life’s most important questions.

The Bible is the most translated, most printed, best-selling book of all time. It is

actually a library of 66 “books,” 39 in the Old Testament (the Holy book of the

ancient people of Israel) and 27 in the New Testament (written by followers of

Jesus). The New Testament tells about the life and teachings of Jesus and his

followers.

The Bible was written over a 1500 year span, by over 40 authors, from every walk of

life. It was written on 3 continents and in 3 languages. It was written on hundreds of

controversial subjects—yet with harmony and continuity. It is truly unique!

For example: look up John 3:16.

1 Turn in your Bible to John, using the Table of Contents to help you find this.

2 Turn through the pages of John until you find the beginning of chapter 3.

3 In chapter 3, look for a smaller number 16. You should read “For God so

loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in

him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
